How the sheet works
- What is a cue sheet?
- The oldest self-test in the business. Every other character's line is cut down to its last few words, the cue, and your lines stay in full. Actors have always made these by hand, folding the page or running a card down it. The sheet keeps the shape of the scene while taking away everything you do not need to hear.
- How do actors use one?
- Two ways, and the tool makes both. With your lines shown, it is a running sheet: anyone can read the cues and follow along while you work, no acting required of them. With your lines covered, it is a test: read the cue, say your line from nothing, and check yourself against the page afterward. Covered is harder and worth more, once the lines are mostly in.
- Why only the last few words of the other lines?
- Because that is what you actually hear in the room. You do not come in off the start of your partner's speech; you come in off the end of it. Rehearsing against the tail of the line trains the pickup itself, which is why the short cue is the default and the full line is there for early passes.
- What does the reader understand when I paste?
- Two shapes: a name before a colon, like MOYA: Take a seat., or an all-caps name on its own line with the speech beneath it. Parenthetical lines read as stage directions. A PDF works too: the text under the page is lifted in your browser and dropped into the box. A scanned PDF has no text underneath, and the sheet says so plainly instead of guessing; scans are what the app's camera import is for. Everything happens on this page; nothing you paste or upload is sent or stored anywhere.
